Evolution 2017: Diversity Lunch

Why is diversity in science important? How can we increase diversity in evolutionary biology? And once we’ve created a more diverse community, what can we do to retain diversity?

For those of you attending Evolution 2017, please join us for the SSE/ASN/SSB Diversity in Science lunch, a new event this year! This year we’re expanding our Women in Science lunch to address other axes of diversity. Look for the return of Women in Science events, and the continuation of Diversity in Science events, at future meetings.

Our speaker, Dr. LeManuel “Lee” Bitsoi, Director of Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at Rush University in Chicago, will discuss “Essentials of a successful diversity and inclusion program.” Dr. Bitsoi’s talk will address three topics: increasing diversity in evolutionary biology, attracting diverse members within our lab groups, and retaining diversity through flexible mentoring. The goal of this event is for attendees to leave with practical tools for supporting diversity in academia.

In response to feedback following last year’s event, SSE has subsidized lunch so that participants can attend the full event stress-free. Because of this, the cost to register will be $15 – but a boxed lunch is provided! If you have already registered for the meeting, you still can log into your account and add this event to your registration. Attendance is capped at 300, so please reserve your spot!
